Demonstration 1

Risk Assessment: M

Stretching a spring beyond the elastic limit.

• Students should be sat at least 1.5m from the demonstration setup.

• Extended springs can store a lot of energy, so students must wear eye protection at all times.

• The retort stand must be firmly clamped to the desk.

 

Demonstration 1 - Equipment required

• 2 x small springs

• 1 x metre ruler

• 1 x clamp + stand

• 2 x G-clamps

• masses and hangers (2kg in 100g masses)

 

 

Demonstration 2

Risk Assessment: M

Measuring force against extension for copper wire.

• The wire will snap very suddenly and can present a danger to eyes, so students must sit at least 1.5m from the apparatus and wear eye protection at all times.

 

 

Demonstration 2 - Equipment required

• 1 x roll of 32swg copper wire

• 1 x desk-mounted pulley

• 1 x G-clamp

• 2 x wooden blocks

• 1 x sticky label

• 1 x metre ruler

• Masses and hangers (2kg in 100g masses)
