Non-renewable Energy Resources

Objectives

• Know that electricity can be generated in coal-fired power stations

• Be able to describe how a coal power station functions

• Be able to state the advantages and disadvantages of generating electricity from coal, including environmental considerations

Task 1

Find someone who:

    ▪ knows what form of energy is stored in coal

    ▪ knows 5 different methods of generating electrical energy

    ▪ can describe the process of combustion

Task 2

Your teacher will explainhow a coal burning power station works.  Pay close attention - you will need to remember this in a moment!

Task 3

Complete this task, which explains each of the stages in the operation of a coal power station.

Teacher note: there is a simpler task here, which can be used for foundation tier groups.

Task 4

Conventional power stations using fossil fuels cause a range of environmental problems.  Watch the short video below, which explains about one of these problems.

Now complete this task, to demonstrate your understanding of the problems caused by burning fossil fuels.
